John Maurice Collins Muhammad, Jr is an advocate, policy-maker, and change agent. In April 2017, John was elected to represent the 21st Ward in the Board of Aldermen of the City of Saint Louis, making him the youngest person and first Muslim ever to be elected.
Born and raised in North City’s Greater Ville neighborhood, John is the oldest of two sisters, Jasmine (twin), a customer service lead in the City of St. Louis Recorder of Deed’s Office and Kimberly-Ann, a Missouri state representative. John was raised by three strong women, and his Father who played an influential role in his life whom he considers to be his “Hero”. At an early age, John has always been aware of the role that government can play in uplifting families and .communities. John studied Political Science and History at the only two HBCU’s in Missouri; Lincoln University and Harris-Stowe State University. While in college, he served as a Intern to former members of the Missouri General Assembly; Representative Rodney Hubbard & Representative Talibden El-Amin, who helped shaped and cultivate his love for public service and community. Before running for office, He worked as a Community Educator, an Civic Engagement Director for a non-profit organization, and was an Regional Union Organizer for AFL-CIO’s Working America.
As a member of the Board of Aldermen, John has sponsored and co-sponsored numerous legislation aimed at government reform, improving the quality of life, and economic revitalization. He led the fight to create the Dollar Housing Program enabling people to purchase vacant property for one dollar in the interest of developing economically struggling communities. In the Board of Aldermen, he serves on the distinguished committees of Ways & Means, Public Safety, and Transportation & Commerce.
John is a proud member of the Nation of Islam under the leadership of the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan and attends Mosque No. 28, where he is active in the Ministry. John lives in the O’Fallon neighborhood with his wife, Asia, 4 children, and dog, Cardi, and puppies, Wallace & Roxane
